Measure it yourself
Measure a distance of, for example, 20 meters or about 65 feet, using a tape measure or a known stretch. Walk that distance at your normal pace and count your steps.
Then divide the distance by the number of steps. At 20 meters and 26 steps, step length works out to a little over 0.76 meters. Repeating the measurement and averaging the results gives a more stable number.
Estimating from height
As a rough approximation, many freely available calculators use a step-length-to-height ratio of about 0.41 to 0.45. This estimate does not replace an actual measurement, but it can serve as a starting point when no tape measure is on hand.
Why it varies
Walking pace, terrain, fatigue and footwear all influence step length in everyday life. A single measurement is therefore always a snapshot, not a fixed, unchanging number.
Tips
- Repeat the measurement on a few different days for a more realistic average.
- Measure at your normal walking pace, not with deliberately long or short steps.
- Plug the measured value straight into the steps-to-distance calculator for a more accurate conversion.
