The formula
Distance in meters equals the number of steps multiplied by step length in meters. For kilometers, divide the result by 1000, for miles divide the result in meters by 1609.34.
Why step length matters
Step length differs from person to person and depends on height, walking pace and terrain, among other factors. A general average therefore only gives a rough estimate, not an exact distance.
Anyone who wants a more accurate conversion should measure their own step length once, instead of relying on a general average.
Worked example
At 10,000 steps with an assumed step length of 0.75 meters, the estimated distance is about 7.5 kilometers, or roughly 4.7 miles. With a shorter step length of 0.65 meters, the same step count works out to about 6.5 kilometers, showing how much step length changes the result.
Tips
- Use your own measured step length for a more accurate result.
- Treat the result as an estimate, not an exact GPS distance.
- The free Stepluma calculator handles quick conversions in both directions.
